Procrastination and Life Coaching

Procrastination is an avoidance strategy - it is a way of putting off doing something by telling ourselves such things as "I will do it tomorrow", or "I am not in the mood", or "a friend popped around and I ran out of time".

Why do we procrastinate? There may be several reasons.
  1. Failure Avoidance
    • Procrastinating can be a strategy to avoid failing - "If I don't do anything, nothing can go wrong and I won't have to deal with the consequences".
For example if you don't that person out on a date, then I won't have to face the possibility of them rejecting me. Or if I avoid starting my essay, I don't have to face the possibility of getting an average rather than an excellent grade.

  2. Malice or rebellion
    • Procrastination may be a way of rebelling against something or someone. Perhaps we are told that we "should", "ought" or "must" do something, or feel we are being nagged to do something.
    • Procrastination can be a way of being angry with someone or something else. We take the attitude "I will show them" and don't take action as a means of getting back at someone even though that might be detrimental to us.

  3. Skills and Support
    • Procrastination may genuinely be because we don't know what to do, or how to do it. We know that we need to do something but are unsure of which route to take

Life Coaching can help and support you to understand the root of your procrastination and develop strategies to move you past this stage and on to more productivity and creativity. Taking action is motivating, which in turn leads to more action!
